TOKYO, June 22 (RIA Novosti) - Two Russian tourists, suspected of stealing and smuggling more than 100 cars in Japan, have been detained by police in the city of Yokohama, local authorities said Friday. The suspects were arrested in the course of an investigation in Tokyo in April. The Russians ran a used-car export business, but police discovered that at least a hundred vehicles they sold had been actually stolen. Investigators said the suspects replaced Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) on the stolen cars with numbers taken from crashed cars, which they bought cheaply at special auctions. They later shipped stolen cars abroad, mainly to Russia.Constable Camay Watson, the Constabulary Communication Network's (CCN) liaison officer for Clarendon, told the Observer that the police were called to the scene following a shooting spree that left four people injured.
"At about 8:00 pm Thursday night the police were called to an area called Giron in Effortville after reports of heavily armed men in the area dressed in police denim and army fatigue," Watson said.
She said two of the injured persons were treated and release from the hospital, while the remaining two have been admitted in stable condition.
