A FORMER Nigerian football international and his wife faced lengthy jail terms after being found guilty in France of raping, torturing and enslaving their adopted daughter.
Godwin Okpara and his wife Linda received sentences yesterday of 10 and 15 years respectively after the initial charges were upheld at the end of a second hearing at a court in the Paris suburb of Nanterre.
Okpara's 42-year-old wife was found guilty on charges of rape, torture and cruelty.
The couple have denied all charges, however, Okpara confessed in both court hearings that on one occasion he did have sex with his adoptive daughter, in 2005. On that occasion, in 2005, he was discovered by his wife.
According to the victim, it was after discovering the pair that Linda Okpara began her mistreatment, shaving her hair, torturing her and subjecting her to acts of sexual depravity.
The crimes were carried out at the family home in Chatou, west of Paris, where prosecutors said the couple - and an elder aunt of Linda Okpara - confined the victim to "living in inhumane living conditions".
The aunt in question, considered the matriarch of the family, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for failing to prevent any of the crimes.
The trio's lawyers are hoping to launch a final appeal against the sentences.
