A 26-year-old zoo keeper mauled to death by a white tiger at a New Zealand wildlife park has been remembered for his bond with animals and humans alike.
Dalu Mncube was cleaning the tiger's enclosure when the tragedy happened at Whangarei's Zion Wildlife Gardens last week. The tiger was later shot dead.
About 250 people gathered at the wildlife park in New Zealand's North Island on Tuesday after animal welfare officials allowed it to reopen temporarily for a memorial service dedicated to the young father.
Mourners were asked to bring a single flower from their garden as a tribute to the South African-born Mr Mncube.
In a farewell message posted on the park's website, Mr Mncube was remembered for what it described as his amazing way with people and his ability to reach out and touch anyone regardless of race, age, religion or nationality.
"We remember him for the bond he formed with the animals of Zion, for his caring nature and his unshakably positive outlook on life," it read.
"His smile was contagious, his enthusiasm infectious, his passion and love for the animals of Zion boundless."
Mr Mncube arrived in New Zealand four years ago and leaves behind his partner Sharon and one-year-old daughter Starskea.
Zion management have dubbed him the "heart and soul" of the park.
Last Friday, the NZ Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry closed the park indefinitely, using powers under the Biosecurity Act.
The agency said it would remain shut until officials were satisfied it could comply consistently with animal welfare and enclosure requirements for zoos and wildlife parks.
